Bungalow courts and garden courtyards

Pasadena, California is credited as the birthplace of the bungalow court: a cluster of small one-story cottages or duplexes set around a shared garden, usually on a single lot. City planners date the type from 1909, when St. Francis Court went up on East Colorado Boulevard, through 1942. On a court the truck stays at the street, and every carton rides the length of the garden walk past the neighbors' porches. The idea outlived the courts. Pasadena's City of Gardens standards, adopted in 1989 for the RM-16, RM-32 and RM-48 multifamily zones, require new apartment and condo projects there to be organized around a landscaped central garden visible from the street. Red Flag streets, curb space and building paperwork

Some Pasadena streets lose their parking on fire-weather days. Under a program the City Council adopted in 2009, parking is banned on posted narrow and winding streets in the urban-wildland interface whenever the Fire Chief declares a Red Flag Alert. Most of those streets lie around the Arroyo Seco in West Pasadena, with more in the East Pasadena foothills; on alert days they are enforced like fire lanes and parked vehicles are towed, a moving truck included.

Streets without the signs are not affected, and alerts can outlast a single day: in January 2025 the restrictions began on January 7 and were extended through January 10. If your street is posted, check for an alert the day before and have a fallback ready: loading from the nearest unposted block, or another date.

Managed buildings add a layer of their own. Ask for the written move policy as soon as you have a date (elevator booking, permitted hours, deposits, a certificate of insurance) and ask who hauls the building's trash. The city's free bulky-item pickup serves only City of Pasadena refuse customers, so buildings on a private hauler, typically apartment complexes, book large discards through that hauler. Renters have one more local rule to know. Measure H, the city's rent-stabilization charter amendment, requires landlords of covered units to pay relocation assistance when they end a tenancy for a no-fault reason such as an owner move-in or substantial repairs. The Rent Stabilization Department can confirm if a unit is covered.

Three parts of Pasadena that change the plan

Pasadena protects entire neighborhoods as landmark districts; Garfield Heights, Historic Highlands and Washington Square are three of them. Washington Square alone holds about 250 houses built mostly between 1910 and 1940, in styles running from Craftsman to Spanish Colonial and Tudor. Houses that age often come with porch steps, original hardwood and doorways nobody widened, so the crew lays runners, pads the jambs and measures openings before a sectional heads for the door. West Pasadena along the Arroyo Seco holds most of the Red Flag streets, and the Rose Bowl sits in the middle of it. On the second Sunday of every month the Rose Bowl Flea Market fills the stadium grounds with more than 2,500 vendors, early-entry shoppers from 5 AM and general admission until 3 PM. For a move on the streets around the stadium, we steer clients toward another Sunday or a weekday.

A Pasadena mailing address does not always mean the City of Pasadena. East Pasadena, which takes in much of Chapman Woods, is unincorporated Los Angeles County under ZIP 91107, set between the city line on the north and Arcadia on the east. The city's curb signs and permits carry no weight there. The street plan differs too, with cul-de-sacs and curving roads drawn around large interwar lots, and we confirm where the truck can turn and how far the door sits from the curb before move day.

The drive in: I-710 north, then city streets

Every crew leaves from our one base on Jillson Street. The run to Pasadena is about 11.9 miles, around 22 minutes without traffic, and the freeway part is I-710 north. The freeway never reached Pasadena: it stops at Valley Boulevard, just north of I-10 in Alhambra, and in 2017 the Metro board dropped the extension for good, so the last stretch runs on city streets.

Weekday rush hours slow the freeway and those streets alike, so on a weekday morning the drive takes longer than the no-traffic estimate. Crews work 8AM to 6PM, Monday through Sunday. A long-carry job at a courtyard complex or a bungalow court uses up hours faster than its room count suggests, so we schedule those as morning starts to keep the finish inside the 6PM close.

Pasadena sits well inside 30 miles of the base, so the 3-hour minimum applies here; the 4-hour minimum is for addresses beyond 30 miles. Per our rates, double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles.

Piano, office and interstate jobs from Pasadena

Anyone lining up Pasadena long distance movers should know which way the truck leaves town. The Foothill Freeway runs through the city: west, I-210 meets I-5 in Sylmar, the road north to the Central Valley; east, it continues as SR-210 to I-15 at the Rancho Cucamonga–Fontana line, the road toward Las Vegas. Pasadena's neighbors and their rulebooks

Cross one of Pasadena's borders and a different government writes the street rules.

• Altadena begins where Lake and Lincoln Avenues keep running north past the city line. It is unincorporated county territory with roads maintained by Los Angeles County Public Works, so Pasadena's curb permits stop at the border.
• Alhambra is where I-710 ends at Valley Boulevard, which puts it on our usual route to Pasadena. With no direct freeway between the two cities, a move from one to the other is a surface-street run.
• Highland Park sits downstream on the same Arroyo Seco that runs past the Rose Bowl through Brookside Park. It is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, so LADOT signs and rules take over once the truck crosses in.
